Maybe it Oughta be a Crime to be a… Certain Kind of Republican?
I guess, given this post, I must be getting more than a little tired of the Republicans. A long time ago, I voted for Ronald Reagan. Once. I know. I can hardly believe it myself. What can I say? I was a whole lot dumber back then. But unlike many, I’ve grown a little since then.
Frankly, even Ronald Reagan must be rolling over in his grave given the current Republican behavior.
What is truly disturbing about the health care reform debate in the US right now is that, if you are going to take a position, if you are going to disrupt political and community gatherings, if you are going to assault and/or threaten people, if you are going to hint at lynching and poisoning of members of Congress, shouldn’t you be required to demonstrate that you actually have taken the time and effort to learn a little something factual about the subject? If you are going to be against government-run, "socialized" medicine, shouldn’t you be required to be against Medicare, Medicaid and the medical care provided for our soldiers by the Veterans’ Administration? Or at least shouldn’t you be required to understand that those programs are government-run, "socialized" medicine? And if the answer to any of the above is ‘no,’ then shouldn’t you at least have to prove you actually have a functioning brain, have not taken leave of your senses, are mentally competent, are not clinically insane?
I mean really. How absurd is this?
Lying to Congress (for years) about the lack of evidence used to justify a war, lying to the American people (for years) about the nature and extent of domestic surveillance, excusing (for years) war profiteering, torture and, apparently, even murder, in our name, and breaking nearly every international law (for years) we ever agreed to by international treaty (and in many cases, promoted ourselves) — and the Democrats and many of the American people apparently in a mood to let you get by with all that — and now this mob stupidity?
This is America? This is what we’ve come to?
Is this finally irrefutable evidence that home schooling wasn’t such a bright idea? These people (the manipulated, not the manipulators) are apparently so steeped in lies and disinformation they can no longer discern even a single iota of what is real and what is not.
My father was a life-long conservative and in various respects, I think I am. Just shortly before he died, my father admitted to me that he didn’t think the Republican party represented his values or his interests anymore. Whoa, I thought, after a whole lifetime of supporting and voting for them, he comes to this conclusion. But perhaps more astonishing, at least to me, is that their outright lies and God-awful, shameful behavior have become considerably worse since then.
I suggested above what was most disturbing about this debate, but what actually may be the most disturbing is the relative silence of so-called reasonable and moderate Republicans. They may not be participants in what is happening, but they seem more than willing to sit back quietly (and safely) and let it happen. And I guess that makes them hardly any better.
I would never suggest it should be a crime to be a conservative, and I would be extremely hesitant even to suggest it should be a crime to be a lying, hypocritical, rumor-mongering, disinformation-spreading, racist politician, but these days… I do have to confess that I am starting to wonder if maybe it oughta be some kind of a crime to be a mindless, rabble-rousing, hate-mongering, violence-inciting Republican who can’t even mount a protest without taking leave of his (or her) senses.

Good post! But get back to Buffy soon, ok?
Just browsing and came across this and thought I’d put in my 2 cents.
Yes, I feel this way sometimes, too. But I guess it can’t be illegal to be an idiot. Not in a democratic republic anyway–if that’s what US is–
It’s nice to know someone else gets hot under the collar.
